Zoe was born with a rare genetic disorder called Harlequin Ichthyosis, characterised by thick and scaly skin. In just one week, her hands fell off due to rapid skin growth cutting off blood flow. Despite initial shock and challenges, Samuel quickly embraced Zoe with overwhelming love and care. Her daily baths are around 3-4 hours, consisting of exfoliating dead skin limb by limb and moisturising processes. Samuel also spends an hour each night scratching Zoe’s back to soothe the itch from her dry skin and help her sleep.

Unfortunately, his wife also left the family a year after Zoe was born. Left alone in an uphill battle, Samuel believes it is his Christian faith that gives him strength. He says, “God gives me a constant supply of grace to continue caring for my children. The caregiving has become a routine till today, but I don’t feel it’s tedious or I’m missing out in life.” Samuel is also intentional in passing on his faith to his children. On school days, he would pray with his children before they go to school. He also reads bible stories to Zoe every night.

His practices have influenced Zoe, who also holds a strong faith in God. Zoe shared, “There was one night when the floor was cold and my knees were in pain. I sang the song ‘Jesus loves me’ and I didn’t feel any more pain. God is good to me. He answers my prayers.”

Today, Zoe has finished Primary 1, and her exuberant personality is heartening to all. The doctors’ review at her latest check-up has also been largely positive. On his part, Samuel continues to focus on raising children who know they can rely on God for any problems they face in life.

“We have this assurance that He will sustain us through afflictions and provide for all our needs so that other people around us can see Him and His faithfulness through our lives.”
